Voice Your Opinion

OpinionViewer is an on-line service which facilitates those who wish to contact selected relevant persons to make known their views about a specific issue of concern. OpinionViewer is designed to provide an efficient platform for individuals to make contact with key stakeholders regarding an issue of concern. It acts as a secretarial service (provides pre-designed emails) and an online post office (provides the mechanism to enable users to send an email to key stakeholder(s).

The user of the OpinionViewer service (by subscribing to the pre-designed email, selecting the stakeholder(s) and then sending an email) is the sender of the communication. Recipients should respond directly to the sender and not to OpinionViewer. Any abuse of the service should be brought to the attention of OpinionViewer. Anyone abusing the system will be blocked from using the service in future.

Abortion: It Doesn't Have to be Labour's Way

Negotiations between Fine Gael and Labour over the planned Abortion Bill are continuing amid signs that the FG side is giving in to Labour’s demands. Even if Fine Gael insisted on its preferred version of the Bill, it would be a totally unacceptable proposal (it would still include X Case suicide grounds), opening the doors to abortion on demand. But if Labour has its way, even the “safeguards” that were intended to ease the consciences of many FG backbenchers will be swept away. It is of the utmost urgency that Fine Gael TDs hear from their pro-life constituents at this time.

Reports of the latest dispute between Fine Gael and Labour over the shape of the planned Abortion Bill highlight the folly of taking a decision late last December to legislate for abortion, the basis of which undermines fundamental principles of human rights and has no scientific support .  The idea that one can support a 'little' abortion must be rejected by those who value all human life and wish to see Ireland's dual care model of maternal health improved and not abolished.  Any attempt to support the direct and intentional killing of the unborn is an attack on the principle of equality and introduces into Irish law legislation which discriminates against the most vulnerable in our society.

In the meantime, Irish women and doctors continue to wait for the desired clarity regarding medical interventions during pregnancy – clarity that could have been provided years ago.  The desired clarity in relation to medical interventions can be provided easily and swiftly by the framing of appropriate medical guidelines. This was one of the options listed by the government’s Expert Group. It was also the first of the recommendations made by the Coroner following the inquest into the death of Savita Halappanavar.

I urge you to contact Minister Reilly and the Taoiseach to suggest to them that guidelines would be the best way to provide clarity for Irish women and address the concerns of the European Court of Human Rights.  As well as a time for clarity, this is also a time for courage.  Politicians should reflect on the enormity of the decision facing them.  I encourage you to support medical guidelines which provide clarity for those situations where an emergency intervention is essential and ethical and I urge you to give a voice to the voiceless unborn baby whose life may depend on your decision.

Thank you for taking the time to read my letter.
