Demand Freedom for Chen Guangcheng

Chen Guangcheng and his wife Yuan Weijing are a remarkably courageous couple. With their six-year-old daughter they have languished for years as prisoners in their home in Shandong province, China.

Chen’s only crime was to advocate on behalf of his fellow citizens, especially women and girls who have been victimised by threats of forced abortion and involuntary sterilisation. As a result of his efforts, he was arrested, detained, and tortured. A barbaric campaign against Chen and his family continues to this day. They have suffered beatings, imprisonment, and countless other violations of their rights.

Following Chen’s escape house arrest, there are urgent concerns about his health and well-being and the safety of his family. Please sign our petition urging the Chinese Ambassador to Ireland to help guarantee Chen's freedom and security, and end this appalling injustice.

Dear Ambassador Linquan,

During the recent visit to Ireland of your Vice President, Mr Xi Jinping, we saw much evidence of the friendly relations that exist between our two countries and the prospects for economic, social and cultural co-operation. With this renewed sense of friendship I would like to ask you to bring your considerable influence to bear on the plight of Chen Guangcheng and his family.

Chen is an extraordinarily brave man, and his wife Yuan Weijing is equally courageous. This heroic couple and their six-year-old daughter have languished as prisoners in their home in Shandong province since 2005.

Reports claim that certain individuals have used appalling methods to prevent people from contacting or meeting Chen. Peter Ford of the Christian Science Monitor, for example, said the violence directed against human rights activists who travel to visit Chen continues to worsen. Andrew Jacobs of the New York Times reported that “thugs” repel visitors and journalists, and that European diplomats who have tried to see him have fared little better.

Chen Guangcheng’s only crime was to advocate on behalf of his fellow Chinese citizens, especially women and girls who have been victimised by threats of forced abortion and involuntary sterilisation. As a result of his efforts on behalf of women in Linyi City he was arrested, detained, and tortured. For some reason a barbaric campaign against Chen and his family continues to this day. They have suffered beatings, imprisonment, violations of their legal rights, confiscation of their personal belongings, 24-hour surveillance and invasion of their privacy, disconnection from all forms of communication, and even denial of education for their little girl.

Following Chen’s recent escape from house arrest, I am very concerned about his health and well-being and the safety of his family. I would be very grateful of you could make enquiries as to the health and welfare of Chen and his family and impress on government officials in China the importance of guaranteeing their security and granting independent observers access to Chen.

I respectfully urge you to use your influence as the Ambassador to Ireland to help ensure Chen’s safety and thank you for all your help in this matter.
