OpinionViewer is an on-line service which facilitates those who wish to contact selected relevant persons to make known their views about a specific issue of concern. OpinionViewer is designed to provide an efficient platform for individuals to make contact with key stakeholders regarding an issue of concern. It acts as a secretarial service (provides pre-designed emails) and an online post office (provides the mechanism to enable users to send an email to key stakeholder(s).

The user of the OpinionViewer service (by subscribing to the pre-designed email, selecting the stakeholder(s) and then sending an email) is the sender of the communication. Recipients should respond directly to the sender and not to OpinionViewer. Any abuse of the service should be brought to the attention of OpinionViewer. Anyone abusing the system will be blocked from using the service in future.

Tell FG Not to Let Labour Call Shots on Abortion

The government has approved the establishment of an “expert group” to advise it on how to respond to the ECHR decision in ABC v. Ireland. There is a very real danger that the Labour Party, aided by pro-abortion elements within Fine Gael will hijack this process and stack the group with pro-abortion “experts”, whose recommendations will, predictably, push Ireland towards legalised abortion.

Prior to the last election, Fine Gael stated that the party is opposed to the legalisation of abortion and gave a written commitment that it would “establish an all-party Oireachtas Committee, with access to medical and legal expertise, to consider the implications to the ECHR ruling. It promised that the party would demonstrate “a clear commitment that women in pregnancy will receive whatever treatments are necessary to safeguard their lives, and that the duty of care to preserve the life of the baby will also be upheld.”

If the “expert group” is to have any credibility, it is essential that those appointed to it understand and respect the crucial distinction between abortion and necessary medical interventions that may, unintentionally, cause the death of an unborn child. It goes without saying, that if the members appointed are chosen because of their support for legalised abortion, the group and its recommendations will lack any legitimacy and Fine Gael will be seen to have reneged on its commitment.

Dear Deputy,

Since your government has taken office, there has been a noticeable tendency for Labour Party policy to prevail in areas where that party has a strong ideological commitment. Among many examples, the decision to close Ireland's embassy to the Holy See and the assault on denominational schools stand out. I am alarmed at the prospect that this same trend will be evident in the choice of members for the "expert group" to consider the implications of last year's ECHR ruling in the ABC v Ireland case on Ireland's abortion law.

I would like to remind you of the commitments given by Fine Gael prior to the last election, to establish an all-party Oireachtas Committee, with access to medical and legal expertise, and to bring to it "a clear commitment that women in pregnancy will receive whatever treatments are necessary to safeguard their lives, and that the duty of care to preserve the life of the baby will also be upheld."

It is essential that those appointed to the group understand and respect the crucial distinction between abortion and necessary medical interventions that may, unintentionally, cause the death of an unborn child. If they do not, the group will have no credibility or legitimacy. As you know, the Labour Party favours the legalisation of abortion on demand. It cannot, therefore, be trusted to choose members for this group.

I trust that you will take this matter seriously and urge Minister Reilly to ensure that those appointed understand the vital distinctions, and do not have a pro-abortion agenda. The medical experts appointed to the group should be drawn from among those who have demonstrated a strong commitment to serving the best interests of pregnant women and their unborn children. Please do not let Fine Gael renege on the commitments it gave on this most important of issues.
